Daniela Larreal Chirinos, a former Olympic cyclist from Venezuela, has tragically passed away in her Las Vegas apartment. At the age of 50, Chirinos reportedly choked on food, according to sources from Fox Sports and the Spanish newspaper ABC.

According to US Weekly, Police discovered Chirinos’ body on Friday, August 16, after colleagues at a Las Vegas hotel reported her missing. She had failed to show up for work on Monday, August 12. While the official cause of death is still pending confirmation by the Clark County Coroner’s Office, initial police reports cited by Fox Sports suggest that she died from asphyxiation caused by food lodged in her trachea.

Who was Daniela Larreal Chirinos?

Chirinos was a celebrated figure in Venezuelan sports. The Venezuela Olympic Committee honored her memory with a heartfelt tribute posted on X (formerly Twitter), stating: “The COV Board of Directors regrets the departure of Daniela Larreal.

With an outstanding career in track cycling, she represented us with honor in five Olympic Games, earning four Olympic diplomas and numerous victories that filled us with pride.” The post included a photo of Chirinos proudly holding a medal with a flag draped around her shoulders.

Chirinos was one of Venezuela’s most accomplished cyclists, competing in five Olympic Games — Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, and London 2012. Her best Olympic finish came in London, where she placed seventh in the Team Sprint final. Beyond the Olympics, she also won gold medals at the Pan American Games and the Pan American Championships, solidifying her legacy as a dominant force in cycling.

What To Do If You Are Choking on Food and You’re Alone

If you find yourself choking on food while alone, act quickly. First, try to cough forcefully to dislodge the object. If that doesn’t work, perform the Heimlich maneuver on yourself. To do this, make a fist with one hand and place it just above your navel. Grasp your fist with your other hand and press hard into your abdomen with a quick, upward thrust. Repeat until the object is expelled. If you can’t dislodge the object, try leaning over a solid surface like a chair or countertop and thrusting your upper abdomen against it to create the necessary force. Call emergency services if you’re unable to clear your airway.

It’s unfortunate that such a superstar has left our world. May she rest in peace and may her loved ones find the strength to keep her memory alive.
