Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, celebrated for her groundbreaking role on FX’s “Pose,” has added her voice to the call for recognition of fellow trans Latina performer Nava Mau. With a Golden Globe in hand and a history-making Emmy nomination under her belt, Rodriguez knows firsthand the impact that accolades can have, not only on individual artists but also on entire communities. “That nomination and win were decades in the making,” she reflects, acknowledging the trans actors who came before her, paving the way for greater representation on screen.

In her column for Variety, Rodriguez turns the spotlight on Nava Mau, a nominee in the limited series supporting actress category for her performance in the heart-wrenching series Baby Reindeer. Mau’s portrayal of Teri, a trans Latina counselor navigating the complexities of romantic connection, has captivated audiences and critics alike. Rodriguez describes Mau’s performance as “transcendent and transformative,” highlighting how Teri’s humanity shines through in a way rarely seen on television.

Teri is not just a narrative device but the moral anchor of the story — a character both vulnerable and strong, messy yet dignified. Through Mau’s portrayal, Teri speaks to the deep longing for love and acceptance, embodying the contradictions that make her profoundly human.

Trans Latina Representation Matters: Michaela Jaé Rodriguez Supports Nava Mau

Rodriguez sees this moment as more than just an awards season milestone. Amid escalating anti-trans rhetoric and violence, she views Mau’s nomination as a step forward in the fight for trans acceptance. “This performance and nomination send a powerful message to the entertainment industry and the world,” Rodriguez asserts. Supporting stories like Baby Reindeer, where trans characters are given full, complex lives, is crucial in advancing greater understanding and respect for transgender people.

A win for Nava Mau would mark a historic moment, not only for Hollywood but for the trans and trans Latine community globally. It would be a recognition of excellence, yes, but also a celebration of the stories that need to be told — stories that reflect the truth of trans lives, filled with the same love, struggle, and triumph as anyone else’s.

As Rodriguez aptly puts it, “When we have the opportunity to celebrate excellence and make history, I believe we should take it.”
