An old interview between journalist Jorge Ramos and Marco Rubio, now the U.S. Secretary of State, has resurfaced, sparking renewed debate over his position on immigration. The conversation, recorded in 2012, put Rubio in a difficult position as Ramos questioned his lack of support for undocumented migrants despite his own grandfather’s history with deportation proceedings. The exchange has led to renewed criticism, with many pointing out contradictions between Rubio’s family history and his policies.

Jorge Ramos Calls Out Marco Rubio

The interview took a direct turn when Ramos confronted Rubio about his grandfather, Pedro Víctor García, who lived in the United States without legal status for years before his situation was resolved. “But for example, your grandfather, Pedro Víctor García, received a deportation order in 1962… Why did your grandfather receive the support and generosity of this country? And why don’t you do exactly the same?” Ramos asked.

Rubio defended his stance by arguing that the situation at the time was different. “It was impossible to deport him,” he said, explaining that the lack of diplomatic relations between the United States and Cuba in the 1960s meant deportation was not an option.

A Debate That Has Not Faded

Ramos did not let the subject drop. He challenged Rubio on why he was unwilling to extend the same opportunity to today’s migrants. The exchange left Rubio visibly uncomfortable, and his response has fueled criticism from those who see a contradiction between his family’s experience and his policies.

The video has gained traction again, reigniting discussions on social media and among immigration advocates. Critics argue that many migrants facing deportation now come from equally dire circumstances and deserve the same compassion that allowed Rubio’s grandfather to remain in the country. His policies, however, have remained focused on border security and enforcement rather than new pathways to legal status.

Supporters of stricter immigration laws have defended Rubio, saying past circumstances cannot be compared to the present. His stance aligns with broader Republican efforts to tighten immigration restrictions. The debate surrounding his position is unlikely to disappear, especially as immigration remains a central issue in U.S. politics.
