After more than a year of anticipation, fans of “Yo soy Betty, la fea” are finally inching closer to its new series. On Wednesday, May 8th, the streaming platform Prime Video confirmed that the series continuing the story of Beatriz Pinzón Solano, Armando Mendoza, and the entire Ecomoda crew will be available starting July 19, 2024.

The iconic Colombian telenovela has left a lasting impact since its debut over two decades ago. Translated into more than 15 languages and broadcasted in over 100 countries, “Yo soy Betty, la fea” has spawned numerous adaptations, including the U.S. hit “Ugly Betty,” starring America Ferrera, and Mexico’s “La fea más bella,” featuring Angélica Vale.

In a recent interview with People en Español, the Latina protagonist, Ana María Orozco, shared insights into reprising her beloved character and what fans can expect from the new installment.

Ana María Orozco Embraces the Return of Betty

When asked about returning to the role of Betty after so many years, Ana María Orozco told People en Español, “I feel happy. This return has excited me a lot. It took me by surprise, but I am truly content. I feel it’s a lovely opportunity for me at this moment in life to reconnect with this endearing character, especially at such a special time.”

Reflecting on how the character of Betty has impacted her life, Orozco remarked, “It was quite a few years ago, 23 years to be exact! At the time, it was a significant impact, and I feel it marked a ‘before’ and ‘after’ in my career. Over the years, as everything settles, and there is this strong and incredible memory of what Betty ‘the phenomenon’ has been, I feel very honored. I believe I’ve come to appreciate more and more the legacy that the character has left behind.”

Regarding Betty’s evolution over the years, Orozco teased, “I can’t spoil much, because that’s precisely what it’s about, discovering this current Betty, 20 years later. But we are aware of the current moment, the cultural context we are living in as women. So, I feel that Betty – beyond the changes you will see, after 20 years she cannot be the same, also because she was at a different age – is also a Betty who continues her search, continues asking questions, continues feeling vulnerable but stronger, more determined.”

Betty’s Modern Journey: Love, Family, and New Challenges

When discussing Betty’s matured character and her relationship with Armando, now married, Orozco hinted at the complexities of their love story, stating, “The beauty is that it has been a happy love story, but also with its ups and downs, like life, what they may go through as a couple, as a family. Mila is a girl like any other, with her conflicts, with her unresolved issues, of growth, of decisions, of what the mother-daughter relationship entails. We have tried to face those challenges, as in life, what any parent may go through.”

As fans eagerly await the return of “Yo soy Betty, la fea,” the revival promises to uncover new storylines while honoring the spirit of the original series. With its blend of humor, romance, and relatable characters, this series has big shoes to fill – but by having most of the original cast onboard, we can’t imagine it’ll be anything other than great.
