During the official kickoff concert of the inaugural Norwegian Cruise Line® Fleet Week Miami, hosted by Blue Star Families, US Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro revealed exciting news: a new nuclear-powered attack submarine will bear the name USS Miami, with none other than the Latina icon Gloria Estefan as its sponsor.

This announcement marks a significant moment in the city’s history, as Miami becomes the proud namesake of another vessel in the US Navy fleet.

As the sponsor of the USS Miami, Estefan will forge a lifelong connection with the submarine and its crew. According to US Navy tradition, a sponsor is a distinguished individual chosen to christen a vessel.

Del Toro, a Cuban American entrepreneur and former Navy officer, emphasized the significance of Miami’s legacy in his remarks. “That shared history is what makes Miami one of the greatest cities on Earth—and emblematic of what makes this country the greatest country in the world,” CBS News reported. Miami is known for being home to many different cultures, especially from Latin America – and a special place for those who have their countries to look for better opportunities.

Expressing gratitude to the servicemen and women in attendance, Gloria Estefan underscored the importance of their sacrifice and dedication. “We are so thankful as citizens of this great country to have all of you out there protecting and serving all of us,” she said.

Gloria Estefan Continues to be Part of Miami’s History

Miami’s storied maritime heritage receives another chapter with the christening of the USS Miami. The 305, as it is lovingly known, has previously been honored with three vessels: a gunboat from 1862 to 1865, a light cruiser from 1942 to 1947, and another nuclear-powered submarine from 1990 to 2014. Each of these vessels is now part of Miami’s history and identity.

Latinas, let’s get together and shake our bodies to this great news. It’s always a great day whenever we see one of our own thrive.
