Karina Ruiz’s path from a young migrant to becoming the first migrant senator in the Mexican Congress reflects her deep commitment to advocacy and social justice. Elected on June 2 to represent the State of Mexico and the 40 million Mexican migrants worldwide, Ruiz brings a new and essential perspective to Mexican politics.

According to Forbes, Ruiz is originally from Tlanepantla, Mexico, and she migrated to the United States at the age of 12. Now 39, she is both a mother of three and a grandmother of three. There is no denying that her personal experiences as a migrant and an activist have shaped her vision and passion. Due to this, she can speak for millions of Mexicans living abroad.

The Accomplishments of Karina Ruiz – So Far

In the United States, Ruiz made it a point to be a dedicated advocate for “dreamers,” young immigrants shielded by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. This initiative enabled Ruiz to benefit from in-state tuition rates, eventually allowing her to graduate as a biochemist — a goal that took her a decade to achieve due to the challenges associated with her immigration status. Her drive led her to the presidency of the Arizona Dream Act Coalition, where she organized and championed the cause of dreamers while lobbying for immigration reform.

Among her most notable efforts was a campaign to urge Democratic Senator Kyrsten Sinema to support an immigration reform bill. Sinema, known for her centrist views, declared herself independent at the beginning of the Biden administration and did not back the bill. Nevertheless, Ruiz’s relentless efforts, including shaving her head as a symbolic gesture, solidified her standing as a prominent figure in the movement. As it happens, while Sinema will not return to the U.S. Senate, Ruiz is now on her way to the Mexican Senate.

What’s Next?

In her new role, Ruiz is determined to continue her advocacy for migrant rights. She has ambitious goals, particularly in education, where she aims to improve access for the children of U.S.-based migrants to educational opportunities in Mexico. Additionally, she plans to promote bilingual education, preserve the Spanish language, and enhance health programs for migrants. Her vision encompasses not just Mexico but also the broader integration and protection of Mexicans living abroad.

Ruiz is also a strong proponent of the judicial reform proposed by President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration. This reform seeks to address issues of impunity, nepotism, and corruption within the judiciary, and Ruiz is committed to ensuring that Mexicans abroad have a voice in this transformative process.

Beyond Mexico, Karina Ruiz advocates for the global recognition of migrants’ rights, striving to ensure that their voices are heard on all platforms. Her journey from activist to senator highlights her dedication to the cause of migrants on a global scale.

We are rooting for you, amiga.
