Mexico Launches Emergency App, 'ConsulApp Contigo,' as Immigration Crackdown Intensifies in the US

Mexicans in the United States now have a direct line to consular assistance at their fingertips. Juan Ramón de la Fuente Ramírez, Mexico’s Foreign Minister, has introduced “ConsulApp Contigo”, a mobile application designed to provide immediate support in emergencies, including detentions. The app connects users to consular services, offering legal guidance and critical resources in real time.

About ‘ConsulApp Contigo’

The priority contact button within the app links users directly to the Centro de Información y Asistencia a Personas Mexicanas (CIAM), which operates 24/7 to assist those facing urgent situations. Mexican citizens can use it to notify consulates of a detention or to request help in emergencies. “If someone knocks on your door, ask them to slide the judicial order underneath. Authorities cannot enter a home without a judge’s order. This app provides all the information you need in such situations,” said de la Fuente, as El Heraldo de Mexico reported.

The Foreign Minister acknowledged delays in the app’s release, pointing to pending Android and iOS permissions as the cause. He had previously admitted to the setback on January 6. Now fully operational for Android users, the app’s detention-reporting feature is available exclusively in the United States.

Beyond emergency alerts, the app allows users to register emergency contacts and locate the nearest consulate. However, the minister clarified that the app’s priority button is functional only within U.S. borders, ensuring its effectiveness where it is most needed.

Providing Support

To handle the anticipated increase in demand, the Mexican government has reinforced CIAM’s capabilities. The Tucson-based center, responsible for assisting Mexican nationals across the U.S. and Canada, has expanded its workforce, adding additional operators in Toluca, Mexico, to prevent service disruptions. The center can be reached at 520-623-7874 from the U.S. and Canada, or 001-520-623-7874 from Mexico.

With the app’s launch, Mexico takes a significant step in safeguarding the rights and well-being of Mexicans abroad. “ConsulApp Contigo” is poised to become an indispensable tool for millions of Mexicans navigating complex situations in the United States.
