Shakira’s unique connection with her hometown of Barranquilla, Colombia has earned her a 21.3-foot bronze statue erected in her honor. The city celebrated her unparalleled achievements and everlasting bond with her birthplace in a touching tribute. The unveiling of this striking monument took place on December 26th, graced by Shakira’s parents, Mr. William Mebarak, and Mrs. Nidia Ripoll. 

The statue, which evidences her iconic hip movements, found its home in the renowned Malecón del Río. Capturing Shakira’s signature belly dance, the sculpture symbolizes the rhythmic flow of the sea and river, while her raised arms signify transcendence, according to HOLA. Crafted by artist Yino Marqués, the creation received support from local students and graduates of the District School of Arts, highlighting the collaborative effort behind this monumental homage. 

Shakira Is Proud of Her Statue in Barranquilla

Although Shakira couldn’t be present at the event, her spirit lingered as her parents proudly unveiled the statue, signifying the city’s pride in her global contributions. Her response to the honor, shared alongside ceremony images, conveyed her excitement at sharing the moment with her beloved parents.  

She took to her social to share a video of the statue and write, “Estoy muy emocionada por este homenaje a la mujer Colombiana y a las Barranquilleras dentro y fuera de mi tierra!” 

Her caption roughly translates to the following: “I’m very excited about this tribute to Colombian women and the Barranquilleras inside and outside my hometown!” 

Even though she was not physically present, Shakira’s presence was felt through her family, with her brothers gracing the occasion, as confirmed by the Colombian queen herself. 

This magnificent tribute stands not only as a celebration of Shakira’s achievements but also as a representation of the profound impact she has had on her hometown and the world. With her music echoing worldwide, this homage immortalizes her cultural significance and everlasting connection with the beautiful city of Barranquilla – and Colombia.
