Speaker Nancy Pelosi Promises to Oversee the Trump Administration’s Response to the Coronavirus Crisis

When the president of the country has a long history of fraud and bankruptcy, it is a danger to leave $2 trillion at his disposal.

That is why House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has announced the creation of an oversight committee to ensure that money approved by the government to deal with the coronavirus crisis is used properly.

“The Congress has so far passed three pieces of legislation totaling over $2 trillion in emergency relief. To ensure that your tax dollars are being spent carefully & effectively, I am announcing the formation of the bipartisan House Select Committee on the Coronavirus Crisis,” the Democrat wrote on Twitter.

“The Select Committee will root out waste, fraud, and abuse, and ensure money makes it to those who need it most the working families struggling to pay rent and put food on the table,” she added.

Politico reported that the committee will oversee bills passed by Congress, as well as steps to control the pandemic in the country, which is a fourth response package to the “record high 6.6 million-plus unemployment claims” reported earlier on Thursday.

“Where there’s money there’s also frequently mischief,” Pelosi added, saying, “We want to make sure there are not exploiters out there.”

However, the Democratic leadership’s decision adds weight to the strong political partisanship that has developed around the worst public health crisis the country has faced in recent years.

“Does the speaker not trust the [House] Oversight Committee?” House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) asked reporters on a conference call Thursday. ”This seems really redundant,” he added, expressing “concerns” about how the committee would be created, the Washington Post reported.

To dispel doubts, Pelosi told reporters the committee would follow the format of the effort created by then-Senator Harry Truman (D-Mo.) during World War II to investigate money spent on defense contracts.

“Democrats were never going to let President Trump be the oversight,” said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.). “It’s why we put in multiple layers of robust oversight, accountability and transparency, and we’re going to do everything we can to see that they are enforced.”
