Intelligent, beautiful, talented and fun are some attributes of the Colombian-American actress, Sofía Vergara. On her birthday, we decided to write a tribute to the Modern Family star by listing amazing facts about her and how her magic has captivated the world.
She’s a Cancer Baby
Born on July 10th under the fourth astrological sign in the Zodiac, Cancer, Vergara has shown to be a closed book and keep her personal life as private as possible — a common characteristic of Cancerians according to Tarot.com. She is a nurturer by nature; therefore, she will fiercely protect herself, family, and close friends. Just like her character Gloria Pritchett, she loves to take care of people and make everyone feel at home.
Her Beauty is So Undeniable that She Was Casually Discovered at the Beach
During an appearance at the show Inside the Actors Studio, Vergara revealed a photographer approached her while she was walking on a Colombian beach and offer her the possibility of being a model and a tv personality. She later revealed to Maxim magazine that because of her Catholic upbringing she had to ask permission in her school to appear in any campaign.
She has True Orgullo Hispano (Hispanic Pride)
Vergara is definitely a jewel of our culture! She started her television career in the 90s with the Mexican Telenovela “Acapulco, Cuerpo y Alma” in 1995, and Co-hosting “Fuera De Serie” from 1995 to 1998 with Fernando Fiore. Despite not being a native English speaker and her thick accent — which later became her trademark — her career rocketed in the United States with her first notable acting job in 2003, the film Chasing Papi. After that, Vergara appeared in other movies, including Four Brothers (2005), Meet the Browns (2008) and Madea Goes to Jail (2009), which positioned her as a Hollywood actress.
The Colombian is the Highest-Paid Television Actress
As reported by Forbes, for seven years in a row, Vergara ranks number one as the “highest-paid actress on television” in the United States. With a fortune of $42.5 million, the 46-year-old and mother of one earn 73% more than fellow actress Kaley Cuoco, ranked in second place with $24.5 million thanks to her role in Big Bang Theory, and Grey’s Anatomy’s Ellen Pompeo with a fortune of $23.5 million.
Sofia Vergara Co-Founded a Management Company
Before becoming a solvent television actress, Vergara teamed up with her now manager, Luis Balaguer, to found a top-notch Hispanic talent agency. According to Variety, Vergara and Balaguer created Latin World Entertainment (LWE), in the late 1990s. A decade where the U.S. Hispanic entertainment and television industry was finding its way up. Many years and great talent later, LWE is still running and representing notable figures in the industry like Alejandra Espinoza from Univision tv show called La Banda, Rafael de La Fuente from Empire. “We knew and understood the U.S. Hispanic market at that time,” said Balaguer to the magazine. “And that’s what kept us going.”
Ironically, She’s a Cancer Survivor
In 2000, Vergara was diagnosed with thyroid cancer but it wasn’t until 2011 when she made her story public. “I didn’t want publicity because of that,” she told Health magazine. “Having cancer is not fun. You don’t want to deal with anything else while you’re going through it.” Luckily, the actress’s surgery and treatment were successful enough to beat the illness, but she still has to take pills to control the hormones of her thyroid. “I take a Synthroid pill every morning,” she said. “It controls your body’s metabolism and gives you the levels that you need. An unregulated thyroid can lead to problems with your weight, hair loss, and other things, so they give me a blood test every three months to see where my level is. Actually, I feel very lucky. In a lot of women, the cancer isn’t found until around menopause — and by then it’s too late.”
Like Many Latinas She has a Nickname
Something very characteristic of the Latin culture is the use of nicknames — although these have nothing to do with our given names. With Sofia Vergara, she grew up under the nickname “La Toti” or “Toti.”
She is the Mother of One and Owns Two Embryos, Named “Emma” And “Isabella”
At 18 years of age, Sofia Vergara married her high-school sweetheart, Joe Gonzalez. Months later she gave birth to her only son, Manolo Gonzalez-Vergara, 26, who, like her mother, opted for a career in the entertainment world. In 2012 after dating for two years, Vergara and her then-boyfriend Nicholas M. Loeb became engaged and produced two embryos by in vitro fertilization currently stored in cryopreservation in a medical clinic in California. After the couple split in 2014, Loeb sued Vergara with the purpose to give the embryos, “Emma” And “Isabella”, the right-to-live using a surrogate carrier, and to benefit from an inheritance trust previously created for them. The legal case later was dismissed by a Louisiana judge.
After the Storm, Sofia Vergara Found Love Again
After dating for six months, on Christmas Day 2014, Vergara said yes to True Blood star Joe Manganiello to later marry him in Palm Beach, Florida on November 21, 2015. According to US Weekly, a source told them that Vergara wanted everybody looking beautiful and offered all guests free hair and makeup. “Sofia wants everyone looking great,” the source says.
As reported by the magazine, the couple transformed the venue in a garden trying to create the perfect ceremony. “Sofia and Joe had extra flowers put in the lobby of the hotel and area that guests would be,” the source tells US. “There are light pink, red, and white bouquets in all of the hallway to the guest rooms, and inside of the rooms of all the guests. Some guests had bottles of chilled champagne in their rooms.”
The bride tied the knot wearing a custom Zuhair Murad princess gown, and Manganiello wore a John Varvatos suit. “ I can’t really be looking for something too crazy. I have to go with what looks good on me,” revealed the actress to Martha Stewart Weddings.
