The highly anticipated list of the most influential people in 2023 was released on Thursday, April 13th by Time Magazine. Per usual, people from all over the world were featured.

The list wasn’t ranked in any order though. It was ordered by categories such as artists, icons, pioneers, leaders, titans, and innovators. Time Magazine also only released 96 names out of its usual 100. There is speculation that they may release the remainder at a later date.

However, it is of note that only nine Latine or Latine-descent people made the list. Regardless of the small representation, it’s still a step in the right direction. (Yet, we can’t help but notice the minimal inclusion of Afro-Latines into the list.) Let’s hope there’s more Latine diversity next year.

Aubrey loves an outsider. She roots for the underdog. She befriends the misunderstood. She has learned the glorious freedom that comes from not wanting your approval. But don’t mistake that cool demeanor as ambivalence. She cares deeply about her craft and her friends and has become one of the most interesting actors working today. Plus, she speaks Spanish and can hit a fastball.”

“Sam Rivera has pioneered an approach to help, rather than abandon or simply jail—as we usually do—an estimated 7 million Americans with OUD. As executive director of OnPoint NYC, he meets drug users without judgment, instead offering support, clean needles, and critical connections to care that include providing medically supervised injection spaces at three sites in New York City.”

“Known affectionately as Doña Mary, she helped found in 2014 a national network of local collectives that teach people how to investigate a loved one’s disappearance. In May 2022 she met with Pope Francis, and in November she sued the Mexican state in the Inter-American Court of Human Rights for its failure to investigate her sons’ disappearances. Human-rights advocates say such efforts are piling pressure on Mexico’s leaders to respond to the crisis.”

“For a football player like Messi, that weight likely feels more massive, as he represents both a world-renowned club and a very passionate country. Argentina’s World Cup victory was magnificent. Millions of fans’ taking to the streets of Buenos Aires to celebrate was an amazing moment in sports, witnessed around the world. Even those who don’t follow football must have realized the true impact of the world’s most popular game.”
