Alejandro Fernandez recently held a concert in Palenque de León, Guanajuato, Mexico at the Palenque de la Feria León 2023 and people had thoughts. Some are upset at the lack of “professionalism” in his show, while others are concerned about his well-being.

In videos circulating social media, Fernandez is seen looking different than he has in the past. His hair looks messy, many say he was allegedly under the influence, and he is also seen crying at some point in the concert.

It’s a sad sight, indeed, especially since Alejandro Fernandez’s music has been a staple in our community’s household. Many of us have even grown up with our family members blasting his rancheras. But this is when we must remember that even our role models – the people we admire – are as human as you and I. The only difference is that their expression of emotions happens in front of the public eye, while the rest of us can usually control who sees the ups and downs of our emotional state.

An emotional performance

His show in the Palenque de la Feria León 2023 gave us a glimpse of someone who is still grieving. After all, his father, Vicente “Chente” Fernandez, died in December of 2021; it is evident that his healing process is well underway.

This is not speculation though. He confirmed it on his Instagram account, possibly after seeing the discourse around his performance.

Fernandez posted a video that mirrored a performance he once shared with his father, while the rest of the clips were of him performing with his own son, Alex Fernandez. The emotional video was shared with a caption, written in Spanish, that would tug at anyone’s heartstrings.

What he wrote roughly translates to how he was gifted a denim jacket that “triggered a series of memories of a time when the world shone a little brighter and everything seemed simpler.” The jacket had a picture of Chente and Alejandro on its back.

“The old man taught us to grow and we all learned each lesson, and there are still lessons that keep coming, even after his [Vicente Fernandez] departure,” he added.

It is in this part of the concert that he starts to cry. This is why it’s important not to judge anyone – you never know what they’re going through internally.

Alejandro Fernandez reminds us that it’s okay to grieve

Grief is a complicated process. Whether you’re someone with the means to get professional help or not, it’s not something that is overcome in a snap of a finger. Losing someone near and dear to you is probably one of the hardest things a human being can go through. For many, it feels as though a hollow void is left behind. It can be painful – both physically and emotionally.

Being aware of the grieving process, however, is empowering. It teaches you to recognize behaviors that you wouldn’t otherwise engage in, hence prompting a path to your healing journey.

And it’s okay if you need extra help to grieve. Speak with a mental health professional if you must and learn about healthy and safe coping mechanisms. Don’t forget to take it one day at a time.

As for Alejandro, may he continue to push through his grief, and may his fan base learn how to be more empathetic in the future.
