This past Monday, former U.S. President Barack Obama (2009-2017) unveiled his annual summer playlist, a tradition that has become a cultural touchstone since he first began sharing his favorite tracks during his time in the White House. This year’s list, comprising 44 songs, is a carefully curated blend of the season’s freshest hits and timeless classics – and some Latinos made the cut.

Among the standout selections are two Spanish-language tracks. “Perro Negro,” a collaboration between Puerto Rican powerhouse Bad Bunny and Colombian artist Feid, brings reggaeton to the forefront of Obama’s playlist. Joining this track is “Bad Boy” by a lineup of Puerto Rican artists, including Dei V, Chris Jedi, Gaby Music, Ozuna, and Anuel AA. These songs highlight the growing influence of Latin music on the global stage. However, Obama has never been one to shy away from Latin music. In fact, it has been present in his list for years.

Obama Has Quite the Music Taste

Obama’s playlist is known for its eclectic mix, and this year is no exception. He artfully balances contemporary hits with classic tracks, creating a sonic journey that spans decades and genres. The playlist features “Texas Hold ‘Em” by Beyoncé, a nod to one of music’s most enduring and influential figures, alongside “Wanna Be” by GloRilla featuring Megan Thee Stallion, which showcases his ability to enjoy modern hip-hop. These are juxtaposed with timeless songs like Bob Dylan’s “Silvio,” and 2Pac’s “How Do U Want It” featuring K-Ci & JoJo.

The inclusion of Bob Dylan, 2Pac, and Beyoncé in Obama’s playlist is not surprising, as these artists have become recurring names in his musical selections. However, one notable absence from this year’s list is Rosalía, the Spanish singer who had become a regular on Obama’s playlists in recent years. In 2023, Rosalía was featured with “Vampiros,” a collaboration with Rauw Alejandro, following her inclusion in 2022 with the electrifying track “Saoko,” and in 2019 with “Con Altura” alongside J Balvin.

Bad Bunny Continues to Be a Constant In His List

Despite her absence, Bad Bunny continues to represent the Latin music scene on Obama’s list, having also been featured in 2022 with “Ojitos Lindos” alongside Bomba Estéreo, and in 2019 with J Balvin’s “Un Día (One Day)” featuring Dua Lipa.

By including tracks from various genres, languages, and cultures, Obama’s playlist serves as a bridge that connects diverse musical worlds. Unsurprisingly, Obama’s summer playlist once again underscores the power of music to transcend boundaries and bring people together.
