Gemmy Quelliz Alcántara, born in the Dominican Republic and now standing on a stage in Miss Universo Latina Reality 2025, opened her performance by returning to the kind of phone call that many women have made while carrying suitcases filled with borrowed strength. “Mom, I made it to the moon,” she began, with a smile that made the line feel both playful and painfully real. “I decided to come, Mom. I’m fine, thank God. The room is big. It’s beautiful. The bed feels so comfortable. I feel like I’m floating.”

With each breath, she peeled back another layer. “Imagine, it’s made of air. Yes, Mom, I’m going to lie down now and ask God if I can find a little job.” Then came the inevitable pause in communication. “Hello, hello, Mom. Oh God, my card ran out. That was the last two pesos I had left.” Her voice held humor without losing the ache. “With this hunger, let me see what I can find.”

She called out to an invisible neighbor, listing jobs that reflected the immigrant reality she has carried since arriving alone in the United States at seventeen. “Waitress needed, cook, seamstress, baker, salon worker — anyone who doesn’t gossip.”

Then her tone shifted again, slipping into satire wrapped in cultural commentary. “Listen, neighbor. They’re looking for the next Miss Universo Latina with all the features that people love. The hair of the Peruvian, the face of the Venezuelan, the attitude of the Mexican, the curves of the Colombians, the swing of the Cuban, and the flavor of the Dominican.”

She closed the monologue without flinching. “That settles it. For my Latinos, I’m going forward.”

The final words came with conviction. “Because with their stories I have learned that when values, discipline, persistence, and faith guide us, we can achieve everything we put our minds to.” She smiled and added a final image. “And she’s eating rice with eggs. We are happy.”

Judges Respond Without Hesitation

The jury, seasoned with artists and performers from across Latin America, did not hold back when the performance ended. Fabián Ríos, who has spent his life navigating storytelling on screen, leaned forward with a voice filled with recognition. “Gemmy, life is made of stories. I love that you’re telling yours. I see your strength in it. Keep going with that determination. Many Latinas are clapping for you because you are telling this story.”

Aracely Arámbula, standing beside him, responded with a kind of warmth that can only be offered by someone who has carried the same creative urgency. “Your passion for acting and your talent are visible. I love that you represented your story. That’s what defines you. Your creativity deserves praise. As Fabián said, many women will feel proud seeing themselves through you. I love that your suitcase says dreams because being here is a dream fulfilled.”

David Salomón spoke with sincerity and weight. “What a beautiful tribute you gave to Latinas. It felt intelligent and filled with affection for those who share your roots.”

Gemmy Quelliz Has Built a Life from Courage

Gemmy Quelliz Alcántara, age thirty three, is a model, an actress, and the mother of an 11 year old son. After arriving in the United States as a teenager, she endured cold nights, hunger, and solitude that tested the limits of her resolve. Rather than break beneath that pressure, she used it to shape the voice she now offers to the world.

She spent sixteen years building her career in international modeling, and only a year ago, she stepped fully into the world of pageantry. She competed in Miss Universo República Dominicana 2025, carrying both experience and purpose.

Yet, it’s her strength that is notable.. “I define myself by my resilience and by the way I see life. I’m here to prove that I can achieve it,” she said.
