The dispute between Mexico and Google has escalated after Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned the company for renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” in its U.S. maps. This controversy follows an executive order signed by the current U.S. administration, which altered the name of the Gulf region in U.S. territories. Sheinbaum expressed dissatisfaction with Google’s refusal to amend the name and has since suggested pursuing a civil lawsuit if necessary.

Sheinbaum Responds to Google’s Stance on Gulf Name

Speaking at her daily press conference, Sheinbaum revealed that while Google responded to her letter, they maintained their position of displaying the “Gulf of America” label in the U.S., while keeping the Gulf of Mexico name in other parts of the world. Sheinbaum made it clear that the renaming should only apply within the boundaries of the United States and that the international body of water should retain its historic name. “We have a dispute with Google. They have responded to our letter, and we’ve replied again. If necessary, we will file a civil lawsuit. They say the U.S. will see it as ‘Gulf of America,’ but in other places, it will be Gulf of Mexico,” the president said.

The Mexican government argues that U.S. policies should not extend beyond its borders, particularly in cases that involve international waters. In addition, Sheinbaum stressed the importance of private companies, like Google, maintaining accuracy in the information they provide to a global audience.

She also took a moment to thank the Britannica Encyclopedia, which refused to adopt the altered name, choosing instead to continue referring to it as the Gulf of Mexico — honoring the name it has used for over 425 years. “We thank the Britannica Encyclopedia, but it is essential that private companies providing information do so accurately, particularly platforms like Google,” Sheinbaum said.

For now, it’s the battle of the names and no one knows how this will end.
