Museum National Design Contest Seeks Art Celebrating Latino Contributions

The Friends of the American Latino Museum (FRIENDS) have kicked off their 13th annual design contest, thanks to the generous backing of Toyota and AARP. This year, the contest invites artists to create works that celebrate Latino heritage, family history, and contributions to US culture. The top 10 entries will move on to a national round where the public can vote for their favorites. Winning designs will be featured across various FRIENDS campaign platforms, both online and in person, including posters and promotional materials.

The Friends of the American Latino Museum is dedicated to creating a museum in Washington, D.C. that educates, inspires, and fosters respect for the US-based Latino experience. By highlighting the achievements of Latino leaders and communities, FRIENDS aims to promote a greater understanding and appreciation of the diverse cultural roots that shape American life.

Estuardo Rodriguez, President and CEO of FRIENDS, highlighted the significance of the contest in an official press statement: “For years, our Annual Design Contest has served to remind people of all backgrounds, through art, of the importance of our shared American history and the beauty and strength that lies in our diverse origins. As we draw closer to the last legislative leg of this campaign, focused on the location of the future museum, it is appropriate that we explore what brings us together despite our differences. Art has always been an exceptional way to bring that out and our Design Contest has been the best example of that.”

How to Enter the Contest Highlighting Latino Contributions

Artists can submit their designs at americanlatinomuseum.org/design-contest-2024. The submission deadline is August 23 at 9 pm ET. Public voting will take place on FRIENDS’ Facebook page from September 4 through September 7, with the winning artist and design announced on September 9.

Past contests have spotlighted Latino painters, designers, and illustrators from across the United States, demonstrating the diverse talents within the Latino community. These artists have used their work to emphasize the rich heritage and significant contributions of Latinos to American society.

This year’s design contest presents a unique opportunity for artists to showcase their creative visions and celebrate Latino culture. The event continues to play a crucial role in honoring and promoting the vibrant history and heritage of US-based Latinos.
