Diego Maradona’s final days are at the center of a legal battle that has placed seven healthcare professionals on trial in Argentina. Prosecutors accuse them of negligence that led to the football legend’s death, describing his home care as reckless and chaotic. If convicted, they could face up to 25 years in prison.

A ‘Theater of Horror’

Prosecutor Patricio Ferrari condemned the defendants for ignoring Maradona’s worsening condition. He called the care “reckless, deficient, and without precedent.” He showed a photograph of Maradona visibly swollen and unresponsive, telling the court, “This is how Maradona died.” His daughters Dalma, Gianinna, and Jana sat in the courtroom, unable to hold back tears.

According to ESPN Deportes, the accused include neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luciano Luque, psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, psychologist Carlos Ángel Díaz, medical coordinator Nancy Forlini, nurse coordinator Mariano Perroni, clinical doctor Pedro Pablo Di Spagna, and nurse Ricardo Almirón. A separate trial by jury will be held for another nurse, Dahiana Gisela Madrid. They are charged with “simple homicide with eventual intent,” meaning they allegedly knew Maradona was at risk and failed to act.

Diego Maradona, who suffered from chronic illnesses, died of pulmonary edema and heart failure on November 25, 2020, at his private residence in Tigre, north of Buenos Aires. His death led to three days of national mourning and a massive wake at the presidential palace.

Legal Defenses and Public Outrage

The accused deny responsibility, claiming they followed their professional duties. Defense lawyer Vadim Mischanchuk, representing Cosachov, insisted his client should not be on trial since she was only responsible for Maradona’s mental health. Rodolfo Baqué, who represents Almirón, argued his client had no decision-making power and had even reported Maradona’s irregular pulse before his death.

Maradona’s family points to leaked audio messages between the medical staff, claiming they show the team knew Maradona was dying and did nothing. “It was clear from the messages that if Diego continued like that, he was going to die,” said Mario Baudry, the family’s lawyer.

Outside the courtroom, fans gathered with banners and flags, calling for justice. Chants of “Justice for the God of Fútbol!” echoed as supporters demanded accountability. Maradona’s former partner, Verónica Ojeda, tearfully thanked the crowd before stepping inside the courthouse.

Justice for Diego Maradona

Argentina remains focused on this trial. In Buenos Aires, murals and graffiti in Maradona’s old neighborhood demand justice. His daughters, Dalma and Gianinna, continue to push for answers on social media.

The proceedings are expected to last until July, with around 120 witnesses set to testify.
