Miami comes alive every December with Art Basel, a global art event that transforms the city into a unique epicenter of creative expression. Often dubbed the cultural capital of Latin America within the United States, Miami has long been a hub for Latino creatives and audiences. Art Basel’s prestige flourishes in this environment, drawing artists and enthusiasts from across the globe to a city where Latino culture thrives. For those navigating the intersection of hip-hop and visual art during this season, Rap Basel, a guide-turned-podcast by Tony M. Centeno, has become an indispensable resource.

A Miami native and Latino visionary, he recently spoke to BELatina News about his journey and the significance of his platform in connecting hip-hop with the visual arts during this celebrated season.

Tony MC, A Latino Visionary

Centeno, known professionally as Tony MC, has carved a space that reflects a deep passion for storytelling through music and art. After earning a degree from Florida International University, Centeno’s career took him to New York, where he contributed to publications like VIBE, The Source, and Billboard. His expertise expanded during his time with Cox Media Group and later as iHeartRadio’s National Hip-Hop Editor. By 2023, Centeno transformed his annual Art Basel guide into Rap Basel, an evolving platform that amplifies hip-hop and visual art.

Rap Basel has quickly grown into a vital space for artists to explore their stories and creative processes. Originally a curated list of rap-focused Art Basel events, the guide evolved into a more comprehensive effort. “I’ve always liked creating lists of the best galleries and shows,” Centeno told BELatina News. “Real rap fans discovered it and shared it online, so I decided to keep it up.” Now, through social media and podcast episodes, Centeno connects audiences with both emerging and established artists.

As a Latino immersed in hip-hop, Centeno draws inspiration from his heritage. “I owe a lot of my hip-hop knowledge to the Puerto Rican side of my family,” he shared. From early influences like Big Pun to modern icons like Fat Joe and Cardi B, Centeno sees Latinos as essential to hip-hop’s evolution. “The Latin influence in hip-hop will never fade,” he said, celebrating the genre’s growth through reggaeton and Latin trap.

Rap Basel Is on Its Way Up

Rap Basel, curated by Tony MC, explores the intersection of hip-hop and visual art with a refined approach. As a Latino music journalist, Centeno highlights the contributions of graffiti and visual artists, while also amplifying the diverse voices shaping the future of hip-hop. His guide offers a thoughtful perspective at Art Basel, seamlessly blending the two worlds to create a rich and immersive experience that extends beyond the event itself.

For those seeking to engage with this thriving community, Rap Basel offers a space where art and music collide in powerful ways. Follow @_tonymc and @rapbasel305 to explore more.
