Weekly Roundup: Empowering the Community

Weekly Roundup: Empowering the Community belatina latine

¡Feliz viernes, mi gente

It’s September, which means December can be felt. Or at least that’s what Colombians have been saying all over their blogs since yesterday morning. As a Colombian, I am tickled by this. Is your culture as extreme with the holiday celebrations?

But let’s get into what we came here for: the weekly roundup!

Worldwide, it’s been quite the week – and we need to talk about it. Have you seen the flooding in Pakistan? It’s heartbreaking. Talking heartbreaking, Jackson, Mississippi is undergoing a water crisis. This is a city with over 150,000 people without drinking water, water to shower, or even water to flush the toilets. Kids haven’t been able to attend school due to this. We will be posting more about it shortly.

As for the BELatina Newsroom, we tried to keep empowerment top of mind. Things have felt so tense lately that we understood some feel-good stories were needed this week. Our team wrote about so many things including a piece about two Mexican collectors preserving vintage Mexican cinema all the way to a coffee brand created by empowered women to empower others.

So, before the long weekend kicks in, let’s take a look at some of the stories we published this week!

Two Latinas are starring in one of  Amazon Prime’s productions.

Academy Award winner Ariana Debose is set to star in “House of Spoils,” a psychological drama about a chef alongside “Euphoria’s” Barbie Ferreira.

“House of Spoils” is about a determined chef who opens a restaurant in a remote state but soon faces complications that make her feel pressured in all areas of her life. While trying to run her business, she is faced with the powerful spirit of the estate’s former owner who threatens to sabotage her.

With all of the recent discussions about Latinas in superhero movies and other big-budget franchises, it’s refreshing to see proper representation in cinema.

“Muchacha buys coffee from companies exclusively owned by women,” said the Colombian native and founder, Diana Hoyos.

After working for different Colombian companies, mostly led by men, experiencing harassment in the workplace, and feeling that her talent was being underestimated, Diana decided to use her natural leadership skills to create a community that could let her support and empower women. The coffee industry became the perfect field to fulfill this dream.
