Eugenio Derbez Is Officially Back as Burro in the First Shrek 5 Spanish Trailer

DreamWorks is bringing Shrek back to theaters on July 30th, 2027, and the first Spanish-language trailer released by Universal Pictures México confirmed what fans of the franchise had been hoping to hear: Eugenio Derbez is returning as the voice of Burro. The Mexican actor and comedian reprises one of his most beloved roles alongside Dulce Guerrero, who returns to the Kingdom of Far Far Away as the voice of Fiona, and the trailer is immediately recognizable for the Mexican accent and colloquial expressions that have defined the Spanish dubbing of the saga since its earliest installments.

Derbez confirmed his participation on his own social media accounts following the trailer’s release, adding his personal endorsement to what the footage had already made clear. For audiences who grew up watching the Shrek films in Spanish, his return as Burro represents a continuity of the version of the franchise they know best.

The Voice of Shrek Is a Different Story

The trailer also confirmed something that has generated considerable discussion among dubbing fans in Mexico: Alfonso Obregón, who has voiced Shrek in Spanish since the first film debuted in 2001, does not appear to be part of the new production. The character is heard in the trailer with a different voice actor, whose identity has not yet been officially confirmed by DreamWorks or Universal.

Obregón made his position clear in January 2026, when he posted a video on his official Instagram account stating that he would not participate in the project unless the production company agreed to give him proper credit as dubbing director and reached a satisfactory financial agreement with him. He was direct about the conditions, saying that if the company responsible for the dubbing did not sit down with him to discuss his credit at the beginning of the film and work out the financial terms, he would not take the role.

Beyond the contract dispute, Obregón’s situation is considerably more complicated. The voice actor, who is also a respected dubbing teacher in Mexico and has voiced characters including Bugs Bunny and Kakashi Hatake in Naruto alongside his long tenure as Shrek, was detained by the Mexico City Attorney General’s Office in 2024 following sexual abuse accusations made by some of his students.

What Comes Next for the Franchise

Whether the decision to use a different voice for Shrek in the Spanish trailer reflects the unresolved contract dispute, the legal situation surrounding Obregón, or both, has not been addressed publicly by DreamWorks. It also remains unclear whether Obregón could still join the production at a later stage or whether the new voice actor will be the permanent replacement for the franchise’s full return.

What the trailer does make clear is that the Spanish-language version of Shrek 5 is moving forward with at least two of its most recognizable voices intact in Derbez and Guerrero, and that the production is leaning into the specifically Mexican flavor of the dubbing that audiences in Latin America have associated with the saga for over two decades. The film’s release is still over a year away, and the question of who ultimately voices Shrek in Spanish is one that the studio will likely need to answer publicly before the promotional campaign reaches its full intensity.
