Another day, another injustice.

The tragic loss of Jesus Ociel Baena has been felt deeply throughout the LGBTQ+ community in Mexico – and throughout the world. Baena, who went by the pronouns they/them and he/him, was a trailblazer. They were the first openly nonbinary individual to hold a judicial post in Mexico and served as a magistrate in the Aguascalientes state electoral court. Their groundbreaking achievement was a significant milestone for gender diversity and inclusion in the conservative country’s judicial system.

However, Baena’s untimely demise, discovered at their residence, cast a solemn light on the persistent dangers faced by LGBTQ+ individuals. According to AP News, they were found lifeless on Monday morning alongside Dorian Herrera; local Mexican media and LGBTQ+ rights groups identified Herrera as Baena’s partner. The circumstances surrounding Baena’s death raised concerns and speculation about the possibility of a hate crime targeting them due to their gender identity.

The news of Baena’s passing sent shockwaves through LGBTQ+ advocacy circles, prompting widespread outcry and demands for justice. It underscored the urgency of addressing the vulnerability of individuals who challenge societal norms and highlighted the pressing need for stronger protections and support for marginalized gender identities. Sadly, the reality is that Latin American continue to carry out homophobic tendencies, which, in turn can incite violence. More needs to be done to protect the LGBTQ+ community as it is one of the most marginalized groups in all Latin American countries.

Jesus Ociel Baena’s Memory Will Live On

Nevertheless, Baena’s legacy as a groundbreaking figure in Mexico’s judiciary magnified the impact of their passing. Their journey as a trailblazer for gender diversity and inclusivity became emblematic of the ongoing struggle for recognition and equality within Mexican and Latine society. The tragic loss of such a pioneering figure has galvanized renewed efforts to combat discrimination and hate crimes against the LGBTQ+ community.

This unfortunate event has served as a reminder of the challenges that LGBTQ+ individuals, particularly those who break traditional gender barriers, continue to face. It has sparked conversations and advocacy for systemic changes to ensure the safety, rights, and respect for all individuals, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation.

May Jesus Ociel Baena and Dorian Herrera rest in peace – and may the world learn to accept others.
