JLo has always lived her life in the spotlight, so when news broke of her filing for divorce from Ben Affleck, it seemed like a familiar story to many. However, this time around, the internet seems to be going a bit too far.

Lopez has faced a barrage of criticism, particularly after she spent over $25 million of her own money to fund a movie dedicated to her love story with Affleck, a project no one else wanted to invest in. Even Affleck reportedly warned her that it wasn’t the best idea. But JLo, resilient as ever, moved forward, determined to share her truth through her art.

The Divorce Between JLo and Ben Affleck

The divorce filing, which Lopez submitted on August 20th — what would have been their second wedding anniversary — has fueled the backlash. Many online have labeled her a narcissist for choosing this particular date to end their marriage legally. It’s hard not to wonder if the internet is being too harsh on her. Breakups are painful, and for JLo, this divorce is another chapter in a love story that began over two decades ago.

She has previously stated that she “almost died” after her first breakup with Affleck, highlighting just how deeply she feels these emotional connections. Yet, despite the challenges, Lopez has always worn her heart on her sleeve, expressing her emotions in the only way she knows how: through her art.

Lopez’s decision to release a love-infused album and star in a movie that showcased her romantic journey was met with mixed reviews. Some found her actions “cringe,” while others saw them as raw and honest. Regardless, Lopez stayed true to herself, creating something that spoke to her at that time. Not everyone could relate, but perhaps that wasn’t the point. She wasn’t making art for the masses — she was making art for herself.

However, now that she has decided to end their marriage, the public seems more interested in blaming her than understanding her. Lopez is not without flaws, but it takes two to tango. Affleck’s history with alcohol and its potential strain on their relationship cannot be ignored, yet much of the blame seems to rest on her shoulders alone.

What’s Going on Now?

What adds to the intrigue is how Lopez handled the legal process. She filed for divorce pro per, meaning without an attorney, and did not mention whether a prenuptial agreement existed in the court documents. According to TMZ, there was no prenup, which means that all the earnings and assets accrued during their nearly two-year marriage could be considered community property. This includes the numerous projects both stars completed during this time — Affleck’s roles in “Air,” “Hypnotic,” and the production of “The Instigators,” as well as Lopez’s involvement in “Shotgun Wedding,” “The Mother,” and her album, ‘This Is Me … Now.’

While the lack of a prenup seems surprising, especially considering this was Lopez’s fourth marriage and Affleck’s second, it speaks to their belief that this marriage would be forever. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. Even so, the split has not been smooth. Negotiations over their marital assets have reportedly been tense, to the point where the two stars are sometimes not even speaking to each other.

Despite all the drama, one question remains: are we being too harsh on Jennifer Lopez? Breakups are tough, especially when they play out in the public eye. Lopez has always been a fighter, using her experiences — good and bad — to fuel her creativity. Filing for divorce may just be part of her healing process, and maybe the world needs to show a little more empathy for a woman who, despite her fame and fortune, faces heartbreak just like the rest of us.
