Ivy Queen, La Caballota, was honored with the Women In Music Icon Award at the Billboard Women in Music yesterday (March 1.)

This grand moment takes place two decades after “Yo Quiero Bailar” (2003) was released. However, beyond her famed hit single, Ivy Queen had been in the music industry prior to going mainstream. She’s one of the pioneers and her talent is not one that will easily be forgotten.

The 50-year-old Puerto Rican Urban artist was given the award by her colleague and life-long admirer, Bad Bunny.

Benito surprised everyone, including Ivy Queen, when he stepped onto the stage to present her with her award. He took this time to express his love for her and what she’s contributed to reggaeton.

“[I am] sharing the stage with a legend who has contributed so much to the culture of my country and to the culture of reggaeton and Latin music in general,” he said in Spanish. “I say this as a fan of reggaeton and since I was a child.”

He also spoke about his admiration for all the women in the genre at the moment.

“I think we are at the moment where there are more female exponents in reggaeton.”

Ivy Queen, ‘la reina,’ has spoken

When she was presented with the award, Ivy Queen spoke about the struggles she faced to make a name for herself.

“When I fell in love with music, I found myself constantly battling to earn my spot, to earn my own lane, and to find my own identity between the guys,” she said during her acceptance speech.

“The movement was underground, then turned reggaeton. I traveled around the island of Puerto Rico measuring my skills against male MCs. Bars became my self-defense mechanism. Through lyrics, I encouraged other Latinas that stand around me to stand for themself and also to not stay quiet when something hurts. I call upon all the Latin and industry women to not allow others to split us and divide us no more. … Let’s stay authentic, let’s stay healthy, let’s walk with grace, let’s laugh more but also remember that beauty is a mental attitude.”

What a queen.

How wonderful is it that we are getting to witness legends being recognized for their efforts?
