At 73, María Antonieta de las Nieves, known for her beloved role as “La Chilindrina,” has decided to pass the torch to the new generations of talent by recently announcing her retirement from the stage.

“La Chilindrina,” who shined in her iconic role in “El Chavo del 8,” shared in an interview with “El Colombiano” that the play “Los huevos de mi madre,” currently on stage in Colombia, will mark the end of her career.

“I believe it’s a great opportunity for me to show that I can still portray a sixty-something woman. I’m putting the same affection into the character of the mom in ‘Los huevos de mi madre’ as I did into ‘La Chilindrina’,” expressed María Antonieta.

She also added that she doesn’t want to evoke “pity” from the audience, and although she could continue playing “the girl” she used to be at 21, she wouldn’t do it with the same enthusiasm and energy in choreography and dances.

“I don’t want to evoke pity from people, so ‘Los huevos de mi madre’ will indeed be the last one, because even if I wanted to continue playing La Chilindrina, I wouldn’t do it with the same enthusiasm and energy for the dances and choreographies.”

Additionally, María Antonieta expressed satisfaction in portraying a woman suitable for her current age, which is what she’s currently doing in her role for “Los huevos de mi madre.”

La Chilindrina Joins Kiko in His Retirement

While in the past she and Carlos Villagrán, who portrayed Kiko in the successful television series, were the only ones still visible in the media, in 2023 Villagrán announced his retirement after a 51-year career, explaining that it was the right time to bid farewell. Although Villagrán’s decision to embark on a farewell tour for his iconic character was met with criticism from some social media users, who launched critiques in early 2024 for his continued work, the actor’s family, particularly his daughter Vanessa, responded to these negative criticisms by expressing pride in her father’s energy and skill.

One thing is for sure: La Chilindrina had a great run and María Antonieta did a phenomenal job playing her all these years. For that, she deserves all the recognition in the world; she was magical.
