“This recognition is impossible to receive without sharing it with the incredible team of our Pies Descalzos foundation and its director, Patricia Sierra, who tirelessly work each day to transform our most vulnerable communities in Colombia. So, this is also for you.

We live in an ambiguous world, surrounded by good music, beauty, TikTok dances, and filtered selfies. But there are realities that cannot be filtered or disguised. There are places where people who are born poor die poor because they don’t have the opportunity to receive a quality education. Places where, although it’s hard to believe, people are discriminated against based on their sexual preferences, skin color, or social class. It’s an imperfect world, but luckily, it’s constantly changing. And that is a truth that cannot be wasted.

When my 10-year-old son sadly tells me that one of his friends wishes to change their skin color because they don’t feel like they belong, or that another friend is being excluded because of their preferences, as a mother, I can only show him that he doesn’t have to stay silent. He can raise his hand, use his voice, and express his disagreement. That’s how it is, Milan. And it comforts me to see, it comforts me greatly to see that this youth knows how to do it more and more.

On social media, you amplify the news that worries us and bring to light stories that, without you, would remain untold. You question things, point out injustice, and seek the truth. And today, having Milan and Sasha here with me, which brings me immense joy, I want my children to understand that to be an agent of change, one doesn’t have to be a female pop star, have a foundation, be a politician, hold a position of power, or be famous or wealthy.

To be an agent of change, you only have to distinguish between what is right and what is wrong. You just have to believe that it is possible to change things and not let anyone tell you otherwise. That is power, and you, the youth, have that power. And if you feel angry and uncomfortable with exclusion, if you don’t let the pain of others numb you, and if you raise your voice and don’t give up, then I can rest assured that my children and you are and will be the hope of many, and you are and will be the true agents of change.

Thank you very much.”

Shakira’s acceptance speech resonated deeply with those in attendance and reverberated across social media platforms. Fans and fellow artists alike praised her for using her influence to advocate for causes that matter and for being an agent of change in the world.
