In less than a year, we are set to be in the midst of the 2024 presidential race. So, you already know what that means: It’s debate season. But the debates are only half of it. Let’s not forget that these debates are only as good as the questions being asked by the moderators. There have been some noteworthy talents and journalists’ moderate debates in the past journalists’ moderate debates – and this year is no different. However, there was much excitement around the second GOP debate of this year as Ilia Calderón, an esteemed journalist, was the co-moderator for this debate. Though this is her second time moderating a major party debate, this is still a significant milestone. These events seldom see diversity, so we should all be celebrating this Afro-Latina’s achievement.

Calderón Continues to be an Inspiration for All

Presidential debates, pivotal moments in the politics of the United States, are shaped by moderators who guide conversations toward vital issues. This year, as reported by The Los Angeles Times, Ilia Calderón assumes this vital role.

Born in the region of Choco in Colombia, Calderón’s career started out as a broadcaster in Medellín, Colombia. Committed to her career, this badass Latina became part of Telemundo in 2001. In 2017, she switched over to Univision, allowing more people to become familiar with her reporting.

During the recent GOP debate, her experience shone through the types of questions she asked. Her questions regarded important issues, especially to those in historically underserved communities. She asked about LGBTQ+ issues, anti-immigration stances, and educational standards.

Her questions transcended mere inquiries; they mirrored the diverse concerns of the Latino /e community, one of the fastest-growing demographics in the country.

Calderón’s co-moderation of this debate is a crucial step toward a more inclusive political landscape. Her presence challenges norms and inspires future generations. The questions she poses and the narratives she amplifies become catalysts for change, shaping the discourse of tomorrow’s politics.

In Calderón’s poised presence, there’s a promise of a more representative and equitable future for American political dialogue. If not that, at the very least she is checking these candidates, in real-time, and it’s quite the sight. Let’s hope the Democratic debates are also equipped with someone who will challenge their viewpoints.
