Sheynnis Palacios returned to her native country victorious as the first Nicaraguan to clinch the Miss Universe title on November 18.

Her coronation became the focal point of an unparalleled celebration. Miss Nicaragua’s residence transformed into a symbol of joy and excitement following her triumph at the 72nd beauty pageant gala.

However, her triumph was not without controversy and disagreement among her compatriots. According to Primera Hora, Daniel Ortega’s dictatorship had allegedly initially ordered a ban on her re-entry to Nicaragua from El Salvador, where the contest took place.

The decision to block her return was overturned hours before the Miss Universe gala. Reports made in Nicaraguan media indicate that the regime changed the prohibition order and forced any traces of it to be erased from Avianca airline’s records.

As per Artículo 66, a Nicaraguan platform, they published how the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo ordered, through the Directorate of Migration and Foreigners, the airline Avianca ‘not to board the Nicaraguan passenger Palacios Cornejo, Sheynnis Alondra,’ who would return to the country on flight TA392 from El Salvador to Nicaragua. They published this on Friday, November 17, 2023.

Speculation suggests that the regime contemplated banishing the beauty queen but changed their minds upon realizing her high chances of winning, thus allowing her return to Nicaragua.

Social media also played a role in this narrative. Orteguista figures and former political officials launched attacks against Palacios on social media, but after her Miss Universe victory, these attacks were deleted, although they had already been captured. However, another form of disproval of Sheynnis was recently uncovered. According to Infobae, Ortega denied a mural in honor of the Miss Universe to be carried out.

Why Is Ortega So Bitter Towards Sheynnis Palacios?

Palacios’ history of resistance and protest dates back years when she participated in marches against Ortega’s regime’s repression. Her presence in these events made her a target for criticism but also a symbol of resistance for many Nicaraguans.

Beyond the political controversies, Sheynnis Palacios’ trajectory is impressive. Born on May 30, 2000, in Managua, she holds a degree in Communications and has excelled as a model and community promoter. Furthermore, she has become the first Nicaraguan to win all three major beauty pageants in her country.

From her early days in fashion to her consecration as Miss Universe, Sheynnis has displayed elegance, distinction, and an undeniable commitment to her country and convictions.
