Kimberly Mata-Rubio, 34, the mother of a shooting victim from the tragic Uvalde incident at Robb Elementary School, has announced her bid for the mayoral seat of the city. She is the mother of five children, including the late Lexi Rubio, whose life was taken too early in the Robb Elementary School shooting.

Following the heart-wrenching loss of her 10-year-old daughter in the Uvalde shooting in May 2022, Mata-Rubio is determined to transform her grief into action and bring positive change to her community.

The incident, which deeply impacted the Uvalde community as well as the Latino/e community, prompted Mata-Rubio to step forward with a clear vision of making her city safer and advocating for stricter gun control measures. She believes that her personal experience can be a driving force behind enacting meaningful change.

Kimberly Mata-Rubio Is Not Playing Around

According to HuffPost, Mata-Rubio delivered a powerful statement to them as she announced her campaign: “A stagnant leadership led to the events that unfolded on May 24, 2022.”

Mata-Rubio’s decision to run for mayor has garnered significant attention. Her strength and determination have resonated with many who see her as a symbol of resilience in the face of tragedy.

As reported by Uvalde Leader-News, Mata-Rubio, who is an employee at the publication, spoke passionately about her commitment to addressing the pressing issues facing Uvalde: “I want to work with city residents for the betterment of our city.”

There’s plenty of support for her. The Uvalde native’s focus on public safety and gun control has struck a chord with those who believe that more needs to be done to prevent such senseless acts of violence.

The election, scheduled for November, is sure to be closely watched, as the Uvalde community rallies behind a woman whose pain has transformed into a powerful call for change. Mata-Rubio’s journey from grief to activism may become an integral part of Uvalde’s political landscape, urging politicians and citizens alike to prioritize the safety and well-being of their city.

If elected, Mata-Rubio would become the first woman and third Hispanic mayor of Uvalde. This is eyebrow-raising considering there’s a significant Latino/e population in Uvalde. She would further become only the fifth woman to serve on the city council. Power to her for also trying to get proper representation in.
