Our Colombian queen, Shakira, has once again found herself entangled in a legal dispute over alleged tax evasion in Spain. This marks the second time in recent years that Spanish authorities have pointed the finger at the multi-hyphenated artist for her tax affairs, casting a shadow over her otherwise illustrious career.

Like she told Pique in her song with Bizarrap:

“Me dejaste de vecina a la suegra

Con la prensa en la puerta y la deuda en Hacienda”

Shakira’s Ongoing Legal Mess

According to the AP News, Spanish prosecutors have charged pop star Shakira with failing to pay $7.1 million in tax on her 2018 income. Spanish authorities are claiming that Shakira allegedly used an offshore company to avoid paying taxes.

Shakira’s team or Shakira has yet to make a comment about these allegations.

Her legal issues began when Spanish authorities launched an investigation into Shakira’s tax payments. The “El Jefe” singer was accused of falsely claiming non-residency in Spain while, according to Spanish tax laws, she should have been considered a resident and, consequently, subjected to taxation on her global income.

Meanwhile, Shakira’s defense team has adamantly argued that she spent the majority of her time outside Spain and thus should not be classified as a resident. Yet, Spanish authorities remain steadfast in their pursuit.

Spain’s efforts to crack down on tax evasion, particularly among high-net-worth individuals, have intensified in recent years. The country is now making sure that everyone pays their fair share, a sentiment heightened by the financial strains caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

If found guilty, Shakira could face not only hefty fines but also potential imprisonment, a grim prospect for one of the music industry’s most beloved icons.

History Repeats Itself

It’s worth noting that this is not the first time Shakira has faced tax evasion allegations in Spain.

Shakira is set to appear before a trial on a separate case where Spanish authorities allege that she failed to pay Spain $14.5 million in taxes. The trial is set for November 20th of this year.

The recurrence of such allegations underscores the complexity of her financial affairs and the extent to which Spanish authorities are willing to scrutinize her tax history. However, many people wonder where Gerard Pique’s piece is in this manner. Surely, as a former couple, their finances were intertwined in one way or another.

Still, as Shakira’s legal odyssey continues to unfold, the world watches closely, curious about how this tax situation will ultimately conclude for the Grammy-winning artist. Hopefully, it can be resolved, and it doesn’t interfere with her lifestyle as she’s been through enough already.
